Elegy in Clouds & Haze (Sunset, Saturday, 3 September 2011)

William Theodore Van Doren, ELEGY IN CLOUDS & HAZE (Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va.) Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

The following, by the way, was the sunset 16 years ago tonight, near the beginning of the Moment & Horizon series. The vantage point is essentially the same, except that today the Blue Ridge was lost in haze and I included local Piney Mountain to the north.

William Theodore Van Doren, OBZ FROM OBX, VERSION 2 (Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va.) Oil on canvas, 16 x 20.

A second shot at “Outer Bands from the Outer Banks” and the strange atmosphere generated by Hurricane Irene.

Uh ... About the Other Night ... (Version No. 2, Sunset, Tuesday, 9 August 2011)

William Theodore Van Doren, FLOTATION NOTATION, 2ND VERSION (Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va.) Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

Long story, but this rather strange painting is now my preferred version of “Flotation Notation” (Sunset, Tuesday, August 9th). Funny, the process of learning not to fight your instincts.

Shades of Blue-Gray Plus Assorted Other, Possibly Quasi-Imagined, Colors for the Sake of the Greater Good (Sunset, Friday, 5 August 2011)

William Theodore Van Doren, SHADES OF BLUE-GRAY PLUS ASSORTED OTHER, POSSIBLY QUASI-IMAGINED, COLORS FOR THE SAKE OF THE GREATER GOOD (Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va.) Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

Translation: I get a little retsless when it’s cloudy every day. I think I realized at some point I could be a painter of absolutely ‘naturalistic’ skies, but that I’d then have to suppress every instinct.
