The sun actually sets right now at what I take to be west by northwest. I turned for this painting a little to the right of that.

This was the first day I could really see that the sun was setting north of its winter solstice position.

Painted Out by Haze (Sunset, Thursday, 23 September 2010)

It was a very quiet sunset, sunken in haze after a very hot first day of autumn (at least 95° at the airport nearby), so it seemed like a good time to experiment. This painting was done in an entirely different way than any of the other sunsets. Not what I had in mind, but I suppose that’s what happens in experiments.

I’ll be traveling tomorrow into Sunday, and may not be able to post the sunset paintings until Sunday or Monday.

August is old summer, cumulative, thick, the sun standing, somehow blazing in the haze without an aura, a hot ghost.
