Sunset, Wednesday, 7 July 2010

William Van Doren. Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va. Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

The National Weather Service at the airport, three miles away, recorded 100° yesterday, 101° today.

This is a sunset more typical of the dog days of August. Haze completely obscures the mountains and, at times, the sun. The sun often appears as a pale-bright disk, very quiet and ghostly considering all the energy it’s poured into our world.

William Van Doren. Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va. Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

Today I caught the sunset moving southward from its most northern solstice position. Bards of ancient times called this sort of day ‘hazy, hot and humid’.

Sunset, Friday, 28 May 2010

William Theodore Van Doren. Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va. Oil on watercolor block, 16 x 20.

After some of the most furious thunderstorms we’ve had here in quite a while, this burst of light appeared. It was covered up in just a few minutes.

For LOS, even more than usual.
